Bill Wieland – December 2017

Bill Wieland – December 2017

For December 2017, we honored Bill Wieland as our Hoquiam Hero. He graduated from Hoquiam in 1957. While at Hoquiam High School he played football, basketball, and track, and even received the Elmer Hutha Award for being the best athlete at Hoquiam High School in 1957. Bill then went to GHC to continue his education and continued to play football where he was a Junior College All American and was voted the best athlete at GHC for the 1958 and 1959 season. After GHC he continued his education at the University of Washington where he received a degree in education. Bill taught school at Foster High School for 32 years teaching and coaching football, wrestling, track, tennis and was the athletic director. When his teaching career ended Bill came back home to Hoquiam and looked to see how he could help his community in his retirement. Bill immediately started helping out at the Hoquiam Food Bank, Polson Museum, Kids First School Levy Committee, Cemetery Board, Long Range Planning Board for Hoquiam Schools. We recognize and celebrate the significant contributions that Bill Wieland has made in our community, and we are grateful for his unselfish service to our community.
