By this point in our journey, the My TOWN Coalition had honored several of the unsung adult heroes in our town, but we believe that being an asset to the community doesn’t come with a minimum age limit. Therefore, for January 2018, we chose to recognize one of Hoquiam’s brightest young people, Nicholas Moir, as our Hoquiam Hero. Son of Hoki and Annette Moir, he is a very active member of his school and community. He attends Hoquiam High School, and Grays Harbor College simultaneously through the Running Start program, and hopes to one day become a marine biologist. Through the years he has volunteered as a math tutor and helped with numerous family nights at Lincoln Elementary where his mother teaches. For the past three years Nick has also been on Hoquiam High School’s Varsity Knowledge Bowl team, Varsity Cross Country, and helped during Foodball. He has also been involved in band, FBLA, and track. Since 2010 he has been on the Loggers’ Playday Firewood Committee and helped set up the field for the show. In 2014 Nick became (and remains) the youngest member ever of the Hoquiam Timberland Library’s Board at age 13, and a year later he joined the library’s Youth Advisory Board. In 2015 he also started volunteering with Coastal Raptors. Nick is a perfect example of how young people can choose to make a difference in their community, and we would like to thank him for all he does.
